The Lord's Prayer
The most famous Christian prayer taught by Jesus to his disciples in response to their request 'teach us to pray'. The Lord's prayer becomes both a tenplate of all Christian Prayer and the very gift of Jesus to all those who pray it. -
Angelus
The most common and frequently used of all the prayers that seek the Blessed Virgin Mary's intercession i.e. ask her to pray alongside us to her son, Jesus. This prayer focuses on the wonder of the incarnation, the birth of the Son of God as Jesus, the babe of Bethlehem. As such it is made up of scriptural texts from the Gospels according to St. Luke and St. John. Within this set of prayers we also focus on our own discipleship, taking Mary's discipleship as the exemplary pattern. Traditionally prayed at 8.00am, 12 noon and 6.00pm throughourt the year except during Eastertide. -
Regina Caeli
This prayer replaces the Angelus for the season of Eastertide and as such focuses on Mary's joy in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. -
Salve Regina
Thought to date from the 11th Century this prayer is traditionally used as the last prayer of Compline i.e. the Church's last set prayer for each day. -
Apostles Creed
This declares the essentials of the Christian faith as taught by the Apostles of Jesus. Its existence is known from the 2nd Century and has been in its present form since the 11th Century. -
Saint Richard of Chichester Prayer
Richard was ordained in 1242 and just two years later was elected Bishop of Chichester though not without opposition. He was described as a model bishop. He died in 1253 and was canonised in 1262, his body translated to a shrine behind the high altar of Chichester Cathedral where it stayed as a focus of pilgrimage until the Reformation. This prayer is possibly the way in which he is most remembered as across the centuries it speaks just as much for us today. -
Cardinal Newman Prayer
John Henry Newman was one of the famous founders of the Oxford or Tractarian Movement. He became a Roman Catholic in 1845 and was made a Cardinal in 1879. His writings over both periods of his life remain influential, not least his prayers of which this is but one.
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven.
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen
Regina Caeli
Joy to thee O Queen of heaven. Alleluia
He who thou wast meet to bear. Alleluia
As he promised hath arisen. Alleluia
Pour for us to God thy prayer. Alleluia
Rejoice and be glad O Virgin Mary. Alleluia
For the Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia
O God who by the resurrection of thy Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
hast brought joy to the whole world;
grant, we beseech thee,
that through his Mother, the Virgin Mary,
we may obtain the joys of everlasting life.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen
Salve Regina
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy;
hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary.
Amen
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth:
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried,
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the
dead, he ascended into heaven,
and is seated on the right hand of
God the Father almighty; from thence he shall
come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit;
the holy Catholic Church;
the communion of Saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen
Cardinal Newman
O Lord support us all the day long
of this troublous life, until the shades
lengthen and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
the fever of life is over, and our work done.
Then, Lord, in thy mercy, grant us safe
lodging, a holy rest,
and peace at the last;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Saint Richard of Chichester
Thanks be to thee,
O Lord Christ,
for all the benefits which thou hast given us;
for all the pains and insults which thou hast borne for us.
O most merciful redeemer,
friend and brother,
may we know thee more clearly,
love thee more dearly,
and follow thee more nearly;
for thine own sake.
Amen
Angelus
The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary.
And she conceived by the Holy Spirit
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen
Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it unto me according to thy word.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen
And the word was made flesh.
And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts; that, as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
